Tolerates Drought
Amur maple is one of the hardiest maples. It grows 15 to 20 feet high and slightly wider, and can be a multistemmed shrub or small, rounded tree. It tolerates heavy pruning and is suitable as a container plant. The narrow green leaves turn scarlet in autumn. Its fragrant white spring flowers develop into attractive red samaras that flutter like helicopters to the ground.
Notable Varieties
'Bailey Compact' is more finely branched and compact than the species, reaching 12 feet tall and 15 feet wide.
'Emerald Elf' is compact and slow-growing, to 6 feet high and wide. Fall color is scarlet to purple.
'Flame' has red fruit in summer and fiery red fall color.
Care
Amur maple tolerates heavy pruning. Provide ample water if you grow it in a container.
Planting
Plant container-grown or balled-and-burlapped plants in spring or fall in full sun to partial shade. It prefers moist, well-drained soil but tolerates poor soil.
