This diverse family of slow-growing evergreen shrubs and trees includes many attractive accent plants. False cypress are commonly used in rock gardens and Japanese gardens, and vary in color from deep green or blue-green to golden yellow. The needles are arranged in flattened sprays.

Hinoki has glossy scale to like needles.
Lawson falscypress is a massive tree, but dwarf cultivars are available. Needles can be gray-green, gold, or green.
Nootka falsecypress has garden forms that are weeping or dwarf.
Sawara falsecypress has several types -- Filifera has hanging branches; plumosa has soft, feathery needles; and squarrosa has soft, feathery, thin needles.
