Many want-to-be gardeners admire their neighbor’s garden or a family member’s garden. After touring up and down the garden, they suddenly feel a spark of inspiration. They go as far as asking their neighbor or family member to give them lessons on gardening. The beginning gardener is the one who purchase all the right equipment that’s needed to begin gardening. They purchase the name brand shovel and hoe; they spend hours deciding on what type of plant seed they should purchase for their garden. Many Want-to-be gardeners go as far as purchasing a ‘How to Create a Garden’ magazine or book. Many of the beginner gardeners are fine between the time they are in the store until the time they reach their back yard with their new equipment. Many new gardeners go all the way even to the extreme with gardening. They purchase gardening clothes with gloves and matching hats.

Reality hits the beginner gardener when it’s time for the gardener’s first lesson. The first step is to dig or prepare the ground for gardening. Many beginners become skeeved by the sight of moving worms within the ground. At this point, many throw in the towel and murmur, ‘leave this to the real gardeners’. When the ground is finally tilled for gardening, many gardeners choose to sprinkle fresh soil and ‘miracle grow’ to help their vegetables to grow nice and plump.

Finally, when the garden is completed the next step is the true test. Will the beginner gardener have a thriving garden filled with fresh looking edible vegetables or will their garden be baron.

In weeks to come, it will take a lot of dedication and patience. The gardener will have to look after their garden 5-6 days a week. The gardener may choose to have an automatic sprinkler system installed within their garden or they will have to water their garden manually with a water hose. The gardener will learn that the best time to water their garden is in early morning before sun rise. It’s advised to get an automatic sprinkler rather than getting up at 3:00 or 4:00 am in the morning just to water your garden. The gardener doesn’t mind the days of scattered showers with a lot of sun shine in between. Rainy days are God sent for the gardener.

Within a few short weeks, the gardener will begin to see progress within their garden. Unfortunately, certain animals will begin to notice progress as well as eating away on your prized garden while you are not around. Many animals are bold and care less if a human is around. There are ways to deter animals away from a growing garden.

The end of the summer season is the true test. The successful gardener picks all of the vegetables that they have grown. Many store their vegetables in their freezer for the winter season while many gardeners will share with neighbors and family. Then there are those gardeners who will take it a step further and sell their fresh juicy tomatoes, okra and yellow corn at outdoor craft fares and salad festivals.

The gardener not only has delicious fresh vegetables to eat throughout the course of the year, but they save a lot of money because they do not have to purchase their vegetables at the grocery store because they have spent time in growing their own meals.
