This highly-adaptable groundcover's strengths are also its drawbacks. An attractive choice for edging walkways or filling the space between property barriers, bishop's weed produces a dense, creeping foliage mass that rises to about 6 inches tall. 'Variegatum' is a rapid grower that can cover large areas in a short period of time. The fragrant, slender, light green leaves are edged in silvery-white. The very small white flowers it produces in summer are often sheared off to enhance its appearance as a groundcover. But because 'Variegatum' can become invasive, it's best not to plant it in the garden but rather on its own solely as a groundcover with a barrier such as a walk or driveway to control its spread.
Care
Will tolerate a variety of soils and conditions, but does best with even moisture; leaves may burn in sun if conditions are dry. Spreads even more rapidly in moist conditions, however. Mow two or three times each growing season for neat, compact appearance. Deadhead flowers to prevent reseeding.
Planting
Plant established plants in spring or fall. Install a barrier buried in the soil around the growing area's margins to keep plants in check. May be divided in spring or fall.
Pests and Diseases
Leaf blight can occur.
