Winter Interest
Horsechestnut is a messy, coarse-textured tree that grows 50 to 75 feet tall and 40 to 70 feet wide. It has an upright oval- to-rounded outline that can make a striking specimen especially as new leaves emerge. Horsechestnut is one of the first trees to leaf out in spring. Flowers are borne in long clusters in early to mid-May, followed by spiny fruit.
Notable Varieties
'Baumanni' is a sterile variety that does not produce nuts.
Care
Prune in early spring, if needed to shape.
Planting
Plant balled-and-burlapped or container-grown plants in full sun or light shade in moist, well-drained soil. Horsechestnut tolerates a wide range of soil pH, but not dry soils or restricted spaces.
Pests and Diseases
Leaf scorch and mildew can affect horsechestnut.
