Flowers
One of the most elegant flowers of late summer and fall, Japanese anemones are hybrids of several wild species. They bear dense clusters of up to 10 single, semi-double, or double silky, shallow-cupped white, rose, or pink flowers with green buttonlike centers, surrounded by a halo of yellow stamens. The blooms open from silver-furred buds, are held on strong, wiry stems above attractive clumps of dark green foliage, and make excellent cut flowers.
Notable Varieties
Anemone x hybrida 'Honorine Jobert' produces white, single blooms.
'Margarete' grows 36 inches tall and bears pink, double flowers.
'Queen Charlotte' has pink, semidouble flowers and grows to 36 inches.
'September Charm' bears single, silvery mauve flowers and grows 36 inches tall.
'Whirlwind' reaches 24 to 36 inches tall and produces white, semidouble blooms.
Anemone nemorosa (wood anemone) naturalizes well in shady woodland locations.
Anemone tomentosa 'Robustissima' is hardy to Zone 4 and produce pale pink flowers with darker reverse side in mid- to late-summer.
Care
Plant Japanese anemones in moist, deep, fertile soil, although they tolerate heavy and alkaline soils well. Good drainage is essential in colder zones for plants to overwinter successfully. In ideal conditions, it can form large clumps and become invasive. Tall stems may need some staking. Provide a loose winter mulch, such as evergreen boughs or chopped autumn leaves, in Zones 5 to 6.
Planting
Plant container-grown plants anytime, spacing 24 inches apart. Divide in spring; take root cuttings in fall.
