Winter Interest
The attractive but underused Katsura tree reaches 40 to 60 feet tall and 20 to 50 feet wide. The heart-shaped leaves are reddish purple when young, turning blue-green in summer and shades of soft orange in fall. The slightly shaggy bark on older trees adds interest in winter. Its habit is pyramidal when young, spreading and flat-topped with maturity.
Notable Varieties
'Pendula' is a weeping for, to 25 feet.
'Heronswood Globe' is small (to 5 feet) and rounded, with good orange fall color.
Care
Keep well-watered during establishment and dry weather.
Planting
Plant balled-and-burlapped or container-grown plants in full sun in the north and partial shade in the south. Katsura tree prefers moist, well-drained soil. Water well during hot, dry weather and during establishment.
