US Native/Wildflower
This large shade tree usually reaches 30 feet tall and wide, but can become much larger. It bears fragrant, creamy yellow flowers in late spring, followed by prickly, inedible tan fruits filled with poisonous seeds. The fruit adds interest but can be messy when it falls. Fall foliage is yellow. Ohio buckeye does not tolerate dry conditions.
This is a good tree for wild or natural areas, not for street plantings or small landscapes.
Care
Mulch to keep roots cool.
Planting
Plant balled-and-burlapped or container-grown plants in full sun to light shade in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil.
Pests and Diseases
Leaf blotch, powdery mildew, and several other diseases and insects and affect Ohio buckeye.
