Astilbe
A native of American wetlands, this plant does best where the soil is moist to boggy. In late summer it produces tight clusters of snapdragon-like flowers in striking pink and their resemblance to the head of a turtle gives the plant its name. It's ideal in a low wet spot, in a bog garden, or along a stream or pond.
Notable Varieties
Chelone glabra has pinkish white flowers, grows 4 feet tall, and is hardy in Zones 5 to 9. Chelone obliqua has deep pink or white flowers, grows up to 3 feet, and is hardy in Zones 3 to 9.
Care
Likes very wet conditions; never allow soil to dry out. Pinch tips of plants in early summer for bushier plants with more flowers. Fertilize for best flowering. Staking may be needed if site is too shady.
Planting
Plant established plants in spring in all zones or also in fall in Zones 7 to 9. Mulch to conserve moisture.
Pests and Diseases
Few pests and diseases as long as moisture is sufficient.
